Ayurveda in April

April: In Rhythm

April has been causing some chaos.
Warm, then cold with blustering winds.
Light, then heaviness. Movement, then stillness.
We don’t only feel this around us, but also within us.
In Ayurvedic terms, this is the interplay of Vata and Kapha – restlessness, mind-fog, slow, unmotivated, hurried.
If you’ve felt a little “up and down,” you’re not out of balance. You’re “responding” with the rythm of the season.

What you need is a gentle re-alignment.
This time of year doesn’t call for extremes.
It asks for small, steady support:
– warmth and nourishment to ground you
– lightness and movement to lift
– simple, spiced, easy-to-digest food
– fresh air, even on uncertain days
– quiet rituals that anchor the day

Spring is a time of transition.
And like nature, we are adjusting.
Move, But Gently. Don’t rush.
Balance comes through consistency, not intensity.
– a daily walk
– light stretching or yoga
– opening windows, letting air move
Not too much. But not nothing.

Simple Food, Steady Energy
Think warm, soft, and uncomplicated.
Kitchari — a classic Ayurvedic dish — offers both grounding and lightness.
Quick Kitchari (serves 2)
½ cup basmati rice
½ cup split yellow mung dal
1 tsp grated ginger
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp coriander powder
½ tsp turmeric
pinch black pepper
1 tbsp ghee or olive oil
4–5 cups water
Simmer gently for 20–25 minutes until soft.
You might also lean towards warm soups, stews and stewed fruit.

Anchor the day.

When the external world feels erratic, stabilise yourself with regular repeated rhythm.
– begin with a warm drink
– pause before your day begins
– do a little stretching
– eat at regular times
– stay hydrated
Consistency in small things brings stability in changing times.

When your emotions are feeling unsettled, working with Marma points can help calm the system and bring a quiet sense of return.
